Ohioans Against Shabby Wages

The SEIU, UFCW, and Ohioans Against Shabby Wages participated in a flash mob protest in front Bob Evans on April 21. Recently, during a press conference, Governor Kasich pointed out the “shabby” benefits that Bob Evans employees receive. Governor Kasich gave Bob Evans millions in tax breaks and incentives in order to convince Bob Evans to stay in Ohio.

Members participating in the protest called for Governor Kasich and Bob Evans to provide better benefits to their workers. During the flash mob protest, SEIU 1199 member Theresa Law gave a letter to the manager letting Bob Evans know that Ohioans are here to offer their services in helping him figure a way to use part of the millions the company received to benefit their workers through better benefits and wages.

“Governor Kasich needs to start leading by example instead of attacking Ohio’s workers. His ‘do as I say, not as I do’ attitude in how he pays his workers compared to how he treats Ohio’s workers is wrong. We must speak out anytime we see these anti-worker attacks take place,” says Theresa.

The protest drew nearly 30 Ohioans and received many honks of support from people who drove by. Participants held signs in front of the restaurant to pass on the message that Ohio will not stand for attacks on working families. The flash mob also drew media attention from TV stations and radio further spreading the message that we simply cannot afford corporate giveaways to companies who do not respect Ohio workers.

Were you aware that Gov. Kasich apologized personally to Steve Davis for his gaffe, and that Bob Evans actually provides excellent benefits to both its hourly and salaried employees?
