According to recent census data, nearly 1 in 2 Americans have either fallen into poverty or are earning wages that classify them as low-income.
An article published in the December 16 issue of the Columbus Dispatch states these numbers follow years of stagnating wages for the middle class that have hurt millions of workers and families.
Pay cuts, reduction of work hours or a spouse losing a job is responsible for many Americans moving from the middle-class to low-income.
