Money Matters for Quality Education

Despite claims by some political leaders that money doesn’t affect student learning, a new report by the Albert Shanker Institute finds that money matters to student performance and outcomes.

According to the Huffington Post, the report cites evidence that many of the ways in which schools currently spend money improve schools’ outcomes.

Bruce Baker, the author of the report says, “money matters, resources that cost money matter, and the more equitable distribution of school funding can improve outcomes.”

For 2012 and 2103, Governor Kasich’s budget slashed education by more than $3 billion.  With the relationship between school expenditures and student performance, these significant cuts to Ohio’s education system could harm the quality of education a student can receive in the state.

Baker writes, “The available evidence leaves little doubt: Sufficient financial resources are a necessary underlying condition for providing quality education.”
