More Ohio Kids Living in Poverty

The Columbus Dispatch reports that a record of more than 840,000, or nearly half of Ohio schoolchildren qualify for free or reduced price school lunches.

This total is 52% higher than the number of students in the subsidized school-lunch program a decade ago.

The federal lunch program provides meal assistance to students from economically disadvantaged families.  Since the program is based on actual numbers instead of estimates, the figure is among the best methods to measure the economic status of families with school-aged children.
